Well Hello 2013!

21 Jan

I can’t believe we’re already into 2013! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Years. We have been crazy busy! My wonderful stepdaughter just recently turned 5 years old and I think secretly hubby is dying at the thought of his baby girl getting just a little bit older. You know how it is when it’s “Daddy’s little girl” hehe. It was cute.

Anyways, I asked if I would be able to make her a cake. Hubby said of course and was really excited at the thought of me doing a “Hello Kitty” cake.
About a week before her birthday weekend, we changed plans and decided to do “My Little Pony” instead.

I was really nervous about trying to do such an ambitious cake, especially since I had never worked with fondant before. LOL. But hey, I like to aim high 😛

Now I HATE the taste of storebought fondant… To me it tastes like sugary cardboard lol. I searched everywhere and found a recipe for marshmallow fondant. Let me tell you, this stuff tastes AMAZING! Just like marshmallows heh, and SO easy to make. I started earlier in the week making the figurines for the cake…

The Rainbow…

and at the last minute decided to make a fondant figurine of my stepdaughter…

The day before I made the cake layers… all six of them LOL. If you’re planning on ever making a rainbow cake, I highly suggest investing in more than one of the same cake pans. LOL, I did all six seperately, and between baking, cooling and cleaning in between each layer, it took forever!
Once they were done, I covered them with a few layers of saran and stuck them into the freezer.
The next morning I got to icing the cake, crusting it etc.

then finally getting the fondant onto the cake! That was the fun part. Talk about stressful when lifting that fondant up to roll it over the cake lol. Whew! I’m glad it went as smoothly as it did.
Finally I started assembling all the goodness!

and when it was done…. I was shocked and proud at the job I had done!

Cravings and Crafts :)

6 Nov

I’m not really sure why, but today I peeled myself away from my craft table and beelined to the kitchen with a MEGA french fry craving. LOL. I looked at the keys sitting on the counter thinking maybe it would be just easier to go to a “fast food” place … and it would have been faster, but I highly doubt it would have tasted better. LOL. I peeled a big ol’ russet potato, poured some canola oil into a pot and then turned the heat up on high and waited… I always slice a tiny end of the potato off and throw it in to test the heat of the oil… If it’s bubbling around it in fry-happy goodness then it’s time to throw the rest of the potatoes in (I usually do it in batches so that they dont stick together).

I let them cook for about 10 minutes then remove them and toss in the next batch and then throw the first batch back in the oil for about 10 minutes or until they turn a nice golden brown color. I’m not really sure why, but my grandmother always fried them twice- but it always works for crispy fries with a gorgeous inside 🙂 Remove and place on paper towel before lightly seasoning with salt and pepper.

Et Voila! The final product! Yes, that is sour cream lol… Don’t judge me :p I’m not really sure why but I’ve always LOVED it with fries lol.

Now it’s back to my crafting! I’m working on some wall art for the dinning room because the plain white walls are driving me nuts. LOL. Hubbykins is off at work so I’m sure he’ll be surprised when he comes home but he’s never disliked any of the projects I’ve done so far so fingers crossed lol.

Remember that cereal box?

I decided to turn that into a big ‘ol star for the dinning room. Right now while the glue dries it’s clamped together with clothespins lol. but it will lay flat when dried. Once it’s dry I can do the paint touchups, some blending and up onto the wall it goes!

I’ll be sure to post a picture of the finished product! No one will ever be able to tell that it was once a rice krispies box 🙂

Off I go!

I hope you all have a blessed day 🙂

Rainy Day Projects

15 Oct

Bring on the cold weather! LOL Life has been so fast paced lately I’m still catching up on posts and projects :p

A couple weeks ago we got a real surprise when the weather dropped from the high 80s to the low 40s. It was cold, wet and rainy. My husband said this was normal Texas weather, one minute it could be super hot and the next it could be freezing cold or pouring down rain lol, I guess my Canadian self isn’t quite so used to the quick drastic changes yet. But anyways, I’m losing the plot here lol.

It was pouring down rain and a restless 4 year old running around. I always love crafting and what better way for a 4 year old to be creative and for us to bond ( I’m a proud stepmom 🙂 ). What’s better than getting messy with glue, paintbrushes and some pretty colors of tissue paper?? I cut out some shapes like hearts, squares, circles, stars, triangles etc. took some WASHABLE white glue mixed with water so it’s runny and reminds you of milk and some paintbrushes. I made sure to lay down a large garbage bag to catch any drops that might have fallen and let her loose on the patio door. She had a ball and did a great job!

Here’s a couple snapshots :

That night was also pizza night, only it was homemade pizza night! Hubby was excited and my stepdaughter was excited to decorate her own 🙂

I used the dough recipe from ‘The Joy of Cooking’ and while she was creating a masterpiece on the patio door , the dough had enough time to rise :

Hubby and I of course made our own ‘grown up’ pizzas :

Then we all settled onto the couch and enjoyed a movie in each others company 🙂

The next morning I woke up and got busy in the kitchen whipping up breakfast: pancakes, eggs, bacon YUM!

I always try to make a fun little spin on her breakfasts: this morning i tried a Halloween themed character:

Originally the ‘vampire’ had strawberry fangs but the little ate them before I could get to the camera lol.

After our bellies were full we relaxed for a bit and decided to make a couple decorations for Halloween so we made a couple ghosts to hang outside.

Just a little bit of cheese cloth, black felt, glue and a couple styrofoam balls 🙂 The little one was thrilled to get some Halloween decorations up… I’m even more excited for Christmas…. Oh Pinterest projects I’m coming!!!! 😉

What a great weekend we had 🙂

I hope you all have a blessed day 🙂
